    Measuring students' interest towards engineering in technical school: a case study

    Estimating from the steady declining rate of engineering students in Malaysia, the country is predicted to be short of 236,000 engineers and technical personnel to achieve its 2020 Mission. Hence, it has built the first technical MARA Junior Science College that introduced engineering to lower secondary students. However, there is yet a study on whether or not it helps the students to increase their interests in engineering. Therefore, in this paper, a survey has been conducted to first and foremost investigate the technical students’ interests in engineering as well as finding out the reasoning from those who are not interested in engineering. After that, a half day engineering program is introduced with a measurement on the interest in engineering before and after the intervention is held. Finally, the survey studies which field of engineering the students are most interested in. The results show that, before the program is introduced, only 8.47% of the technical students have shown high interests in engineering field with only 7.5% female students are interested in engineering compared to 18.42% for male students. After the program is introduced, as high as 33.05% students rated their interest in engineering field as ‘most interested’, with 39.47% in male students and 30% in female students. It proves that an engineering event is crucial in increasing students’ interests in engineering.     Managing energy in the residential areas has becoming essential with the aim of cost saving, to realize a practical approach of home energy management system (HEMS) in the area of heterogeneous Internet-of-Thing (IoT) devices. The devices are currently developed in different standards and protocols. Integration of these devices in the same HEMS is an issue, and many systems were proposed to integrate them efficiently. However, implementing new systems will incur high capital cost. This work aims to conduct a review on recent HEMS studies towards achieving the same objectives: energy efficiency, energy saving, reduce energy cost, reduce peak to average ratio, and maximizing user's comfort. Potential research directions and discussion on current issues and challenges in HEMS implementation are also provided

    A Review on Sensor Node Placement Techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks

    One way to provide Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) with maximum coverage, maximum connectivity, minimum deployment cost and minimum energy consumption is through an effective planning mechanism in arranging an optimum number of sensor nodes. Proper planning will provide a cost-effective deployment by having optimal placements for the sensor nodes. Sensor node placement schemes are needed to accommodate the balance of coverage and energy consumption since closer sensor nodes not only reduces the energy consumption but will result in the network coverage becoming smaller. This paper critically reviews the research and development work done in sensor node placement. Based on the review, the design objectives that need to be considered are identified.     Protein produced by Bacillus subtilis ATCC21332 in the presence of Cymbopogon flexuosus essential oil

    Proteins levels produced by bacteria may be increased in stressful surroundings, such as in the presence of antibiotics. It appears that many antimicrobial agents or antibiotics, when used at low concentrations, have in common the ability to activate or repress gene transcription, which is distinct from their inhibitory effect. There have been comparatively few studies on the potential of antibiotics or natural compounds in nature as a specific chemical signal that can trigger a variety of biological functions. Therefore, this study was focusing on the effect of essential oil from Cymbopogon flexuosus in regulating proteins production by Bacillus subtilis ATCC21332. The Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of the C. flexuosus essential oil on B. subtilis was determined by using microdilution assay, resulting 1.76mg/ml. The bacteria cells were further exposed to the C. flexuosus essential oil at concentration of 0.01 MIC for 72 h. The proteins were then isolated and analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Proteins profile showed that a band with approximate size of 30 kDa was appeared for the treated bacteria with C. flexuosus essential oil. Thus, B. subtilis ATCC21332 in stressful condition with the presence of C. flexuosus essential oils at low concentration could induce the protein production. The isolated protein also showed antimicrobial activity against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

    5G Technology: ML Hyperparameter Tuning Analysis for Subcarrier Spacing Prediction Model

    Resource optimisation is critical because 5G is intended to be a major enabler and a leading infrastructure provider in the information and communication technology sector by supporting a wide range of upcoming services with varying requirements. Therefore, system improvisation techniques, such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning, must be applied to make the model customisable. Moreover, improvisation allows the prediction system to generate the most accurate outcomes and valuable insights from data whilst enabling effective decisions. In this study, we first provide a literature study on the applications of ML and a summary of the hyperparameters influencing the prediction capabilities of the ML models for the communication system. We demonstrate the behaviour of four ML models: k nearest neighbour, classification and regression trees, random forest and support vector machine. Then, we observe and elaborate on the suitable hyperparameter values for each model based on the accuracy in prediction performance. Based on our observation, the optimal hyperparameter setting for ML models is essential because it directly impacts the model’s performance.     Many researchers have proposed algorithms to improve the network performance of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) clustering techniques for different applications. The effectiveness of the clustering model is the most important challenge. The K-Means clustering algorithm is an effective algorithm for multi-clusters that can be used in VANETs. The problems with the K-Means algorithm concern the selection of a suitable number of clusters, the creation of a highly reliable cluster, and achieving high similarity within a cluster. To address these problems, a novel method combining a covering rough set and a K-Means clustering algorithm (RK-Means) was proposed in this paper. Firstly, RK-Means creates multi-groups of vehicles using a covering rough set based on effective parameters. Secondly, the K-value-calculating algorithm computes the optimal number of clusters. Finally, the classical K-Means algorithm is applied to create the vehicle clusters for each covering rough set group. The datasets used in this work were imported from Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO), representing two highway scenarios, high-density and low-density. Four evaluation indexes, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), silhouette coefficient (SC), Davies–Bouldin (DB) index, and Dunn index (DI), were used directly to test and evaluate the results of the clustering. The evaluation process was implemented on RK-Means, K-Means++, and OK-Means models. The result of the compression showed that RK-Means had high cluster similarity, greater reliability, and error reductions of 32.5% and 24.2% compared with OK-Means and K-Means++, respectively
